Terms of use

By using OpenOffice.org.nz you accept these terms. Please read them before you use the site. Their purpose is to make clear what the site is – and what it is not.

About the site

OpenOffice.org.nz is an independent information site about office software, written for readers in New Zealand. The site is represented by the website’s owner.

Our purpose is to provide neutral, fact-based information about office suites, file formats, templates and related tools. We do not develop or sell software, we do not provide user accounts, and we do not offer official product support.

OpenOffice.org.nz is not the Apache OpenOffice project and is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by The Apache Software Foundation, The Document Foundation, Microsoft, Google or any other software developer mentioned on the site. The official home of Apache OpenOffice is openoffice.org.

Information only, not professional advice

The content on OpenOffice.org.nz is general and informative in nature. It is not personalised IT, security, licensing, legal or financial advice, and it is not a recommendation to choose a particular product or supplier.

Every household and organisation has different needs, devices and obligations. Decisions about which software to install, which subscription to buy or how to store your documents are always yours to make, and you make them at your own risk. Where the stakes are high – for example for a business, a school or records you are legally required to keep – we recommend that you check with the software’s developer or a qualified adviser.

Software, downloads and templates

Our guides describe software that is made and distributed by third parties. Where an article explains how to download or install a program, you should obtain it from the developer’s official source and review the licence terms that apply to it.

Installing software, changing settings and converting files always carries some risk. Before following any guide, make sure you have a current backup of your documents and that the software is compatible with your device. Some programs we write about are older or are no longer actively developed, and they may contain unresolved security issues; our articles aim to point this out, but the responsibility for deciding whether to use a program rests with you.

Where we provide or describe templates, formulas or example files, they are offered as general starting points, without any guarantee that they are error-free or suitable for your particular purpose. Check any calculations before you rely on them.

Limitation of liability

We aim for all information to be accurate and up to date, and we check facts against reliable sources. Even so, details can become outdated or contain errors, for example when a developer releases a new version, moves a menu, changes a price or ends support for a product.

We therefore give no guarantee that the content is always complete, correct or current. Information about prices, plans, system requirements, licence terms and security status should always be confirmed with the supplier’s own official information before you act on it.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage that arises from your use of the site or from relying on information published on it, including loss of data, loss of documents, software faults or interruption to your work.

Nothing in these terms limits any rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 that cannot lawfully be excluded.

The site contains links to external websites, such as software developers, government agencies and other reference sources. We are not responsible for the content of those sites, for any software they offer or for how they handle personal information.

A link to an external site does not mean that we endorse it. It means that the site may be a relevant source of further information.
